The twelfth American Indian Heritage Month poster. In recognition of the "Month of the American Indian Heritage".” Skywomen ~ Moment in Flight” In the center of the universe, in the sky world where the creator (Sungoyadeeso) dwells, there exists a celestial tree. In a time long ago before the existence of the Haudenosaunee, before there were Ongwehonwey (people) the world as we know it was covered with water. A woman of the sky people, pregnant with child was drawn to this celestial tree. On its branches grew every fruit and leaf known to exist. On its trunk grew every flower and deep in its roots every known medicine. Some say she was the daughter of the creator. Driven by curiosity and appetite she dug about its roots. She dug through the soft earth and a hole opened. She peered through and saw only water in a world below. The animals below saw the light for the very first time. She slipped through the hole and on her way she reached out grabbing at roots, plants, seeds and foliage from the tree. The water animals saw her coming forth. They knew she was brining new life. They knew they had to create a place for her to live. The turtle offered his huge back for her to land. The mallards, geese and swans all rustled forth to break her fall. Flying to her, they comforther in her “moment in flight”.American Indian Heritage Month is sponsored by the USDA, Soil Conservation Service, in association with the Ohio Valley RC&D Council and the USDA, Natural Resources Conservation Service. |
