| Title: | Images of Rural Japan |
| Author: | Newman, Steven |
| Description: |
In Japan, as part of his Worldwalk, Steven Newman walked over 2,000 miles from September to November 1987. The walk took Steven down the lengths of four of the five major islands in the Japanese archipelago: Hokkaido, Honshu, Kyushu, and Okinawa. Later, over the course of several trips from 2003-2005, Steven walked over 1000 miles on the remaining major island, Shikoku. On this island, Steven retraced a 1200- year- old footpath that led him to the 88 ancient temples on the famous Henro pilgrimage. Most of Japan's terrain is rugged volcanic mountain ridges and deep, lush valleys filled with rice paddies and bamboo forests. Tidy villages can be found alongside the many rushing rivers that spill from the steep mountainsides. The attached images are of the countryside between the villages and cities. |
