| Description: | During Newman's trip he saw many different types of statues of Buddhas and religious deities. According to an American-born scholar of the Japanese culture, Mark Schumacher, the name "Buddha" stands for "the anointed one." He also points out in his research that in some Shinto and Buddhist rituals statues of the Buddha and many deities may be painted red or covered with red aprons and cloth covers. Red represents the expelling of demons and various illnesses. The eight-armed deity is known as Fukukenjaku Kannon. Japan scholar Mark Schumacher says this deity stands for "never empty lasso." (Note the lasso in the deity's lower left hand.) The belief is that the Kannon binds the souls. There is a massive group of Fukukenjaku Kannon Buddhas in one old temple in Kyoto. Legend has it that if a person searches through the seemingly countless faces on those particular statues, he or she will come across a statue's face that is just like them self. |
