In many of the major cities on Steven's walk through Japan he would find the highest point in each of the cities was dominated by the hulking walls and tower of a castle. Built of wood and stone, the massive towers of the castles were mostly empty relics from an earlier age when the castles were centers of defense and governance. When Steven was in Japan only about 100 of the 5,000 that once existed still remained.
